WinterKids is a non-profit organization committed to helping our children develop lifelong habits of health, education, and fitness through participation in outdoor winter activities. What started in 1997 as relatively small endeavor with 5th graders has blossomed into a true statewide initiative with over 27,500 Mainers directly participating in WinterKids programs. Today, the WinterKids Passport program includes 53 partners: 16 downhill ski areas, 21 cross country ski centers, 12 ice arenas, 3 tubing and sledding parks, and even 1 dog sledding center!

Childhood inactivity and obesity go hand in hand — and the health impacts on our youth can last a lifetime. According to the Center for Disease Control, childhood obesity rates have doubled for preschool children ages 2–5 and tripled for children ages 6–11. Over 10 million children over the age of 6 are considered obese (20% or more over their ideal weight) — and this number keeps climbing. Winterkids shines a much needed light on this growing epidemic and offers simple solutions to get kids active and enjoying the fine winter weather in Maine.

Time Warner Cable is proud to be a major sponsor of the WinterKids program and will be working closely with their small but dedicated staff to help promote and support the incredible work they do each year.
